Transportation & Manufacturing Services provides vehicles that are safe, dependable, and efficient to meet BYU’s needs. We maintain, repair, and replace university vehicles, as required. There are seven areas to assist with these university vehicle needs: the Auto Shop, Auto Body Shop, Manufacturing Shop, Service Station, Small Equipment Repair, Vehicle Rental, and Welding.

Any accidents involving a university vehicle must complete a Driver's Incident Report through the BYU Incident web page.

Auto & Auto Body Shops

The Auto & Auto Body Shops provide body repair, emissions, and inspections for university vehicles. We offer motorist assistance for lockouts, jump starts, and flat tires to all university personnel, students, and guests for a nominal fee. Our shop maintains university vehicle and CDL records, as well as Physical Facilities commercial driver records.

When a university vehicle is retired, the Auto Shop sends the vehicle to BYU Surplus to be sold as a bid vehicle or a sale vehicle. All surplus cars, trucks, passenger vans, SUV, and commercial-type vehicles are posted on the BYU Surplus web page. Any questions regarding surplus vehicles should be directed to BYU Purchasing at 801-422-3872.

Manufacturing Shop

The Manufacturing Shop (formally known as the Prototype Manufacturing Lab, Precision Machining Lab, or PML) is equipped with advanced equipment, qualified personnel, and provides cutting edge manufacturing services that help keep campus facilities running. This facility provides the following capabilities for all campus departments:
  • CAD modeling & engineering
  • Product development for academic research & campus facilities repairs
  • Multi-axis CNC mill
  • CNC lathe with live turret spindle capacity
  • Wire EDM
  • GTAW, SMAW, GMAW, YAG-wave Laser micro-welding capabilities
  • Professional quality polymer FDM 3D printing
  • Direct Metal Laser Melting (DMLM) additive manufacturing machine
The existence of this facility helps gives BYU technological and financial advantage over many other universities. The shop operates with minimal cost to BYU departments and is directly influential to the success of BYU's nationally renowned research.

Service Station

The Service Station performs scheduled service maintenance and provides self-service fuel and vehicle cleaning for university vehicles.

Small Equipment Repair

Small Equipment Repair is in charge of maintaining and repairing all tools and equipment utilized by Physical Facilities. We also provide fuel services for remote campus locations.

Vehicle Rental

Vehicle Rental provides four-wheel drive vehicles, vans, and box trucks to campus departments on a rental basis for university business only. Visit the Vehicle Rental web page for a complete list of available vehicles and to submit a vehicle rental request.

Welding

The Welding Shop is located in 166 BRWB. We provide maintenance and light fabrication for metal materials on campus from small brackets all the way up to structural frame work. Services provided include welding of steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. We have the ability to cut metals using a plasma torch, oxygen/acetylene torch, and a plate shear. The Welding Shop services and repairs anything on campus that needs to be welded, such as railings, vehicles, mounting brackets, carts, and so much more.
