Don't Skip!

Student Housing has contracted with BYU Carpet Cleaning to clean the on-campus apartment carpets three times a year. Wyview Park and Wymount Terrance residents are permitted to skip one carpet cleaning each year, but we do not recommend it. Below are 23 reasons why routine carpet cleaning is extremely beneficial.

23 Reasons Why Routine Carpet Cleaning is Extremely Beneficial

Could your carpet be affecting your health? Most carpet manufacturers recommend professional carpet cleaning at least ever 12-18 months and here's why:

Children are at Greater Risk

  • The average American child spends 90% of their time indoors.
  • Studies show most carpets carry between 5 and 25 grams of dirt and dust per square meter.
  • 75% of people admit to walking on carpet with shoes, dragging in dust, allergens, and pollutants.
  • Microscopic lead dust is often found in carpet. Many studies show a relationship between lead levels in carpet and children's blood levels.

Allergies & Asthma

  • 25 million people suffer from asthma and 50 million suffer from indoor allergies.
  • Carpets contain high amounts of allergens in bedrooms causing respiratory problems while sleeping.
  • According to a national survey, there is a correlation between severe asthma and the amount of dust found in carpets.
  • Routine carpet cleaning can reduce up to 98% of allergens from your carpet and drastically increase indoor air quality.

Mold, Fungal Infections & Mycotoxins

  • Mold spores are small enough to hide in carpet fibers. Exposure to mold has been directly linked to asthma in children.
  • Many molds cause hay fever like symptoms and asthma attacks.
  • Some molds contain mycotoxins that can be especially bad for your health.
  • Hidden mold spores in your carpet can start to spread within 24 hours of being exposed to moisture.

Indoor Air Quality Declines as Carpets Trap Pollutants

  • The EPA ranks indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health.
  • 50% of all illnesses are caused by polluted indoor air.
  • Vacuuming twice a week has been shown to reduce airborne particles by up to 50%.
  • Due to agitating the carpet, airborne dust levels actually rise significantly directly after vacuuming (carpet cleaning combats this).

Hidden Bacteria and Viruses

  • Carpets have been found to be 4,000 times dirtier than your toilet seat.
  • Four out of ten people have never had their carpets professionally cleaned.

Dust Mites

  • Studies show that dust mites are one of the highest leading causes of asthma and indoor allergies in children.
  • An ounce of dust can carry 40,000 dust mites.

Chemicals

  • Some newer carpet contains VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) that can cause respiratory problems when released into the air.
  • Biological and chemical contaminants were found to be far higher in rooms with un-cleaned carpets.
  • Carpet cleaning reduces higher levels of lead dust in carpet when compared to vacuuming alone.
In addition to these reasons, one important reason for us not to skip your apartment is you have already paid for these three cleanings with your rent. Take advantage of this service to create a healthier home.
